The interior design team was contacted remotely by a young and vibrant family moving from San Francisco to an existing home in Zionsville, Indiana. The designers were asked to transform an outdated farm house into their dream home through a series of thoughtful and calculated phased upgrades. With a new baby and work-from-home spaces to consider, they articulated specific ideas they sought for this phase one freshening up of their spaces with an organic and handcrafted vibe. We were given access to the vacant house, bringing along the specific subcontractors needed for the work and were able to recommend additional improvement concepts that would maximize the aesthetic to suit their style and move them in quickly. To accomplish their design desires, we selected several new finishes including a trim and wall paint package, multi-tonal solid walnut wood flooring, nylon cut and loop graphical carpet, a cellular shade package, solid brass architectural door hardware package, and handcrafted lighting fixtures for this first phase of remodeling. Additionally, extraneous Victorian adornments to the millwork and unsightly built-ins were removed, plus a layered light plan was created allowing for the clean lines the clients and designers adored.
Beyond refreshing floors, walls, and architectural details of the house, the couple requested professional space planning of their existing San Francisco furnishings into their new Hoosier home. They provided us existing furnishing measurements and photos which we hand drafted each item in AutoCAD to present a new whole house furniture space plan. We then advised upon areas key new furnishing items would be appropriate. The couple and baby happily moved in on schedule after the remodel was efficiently completed on time.
After settling in and enjoying their Indiana home’s transformation with these enhanced backdrops, the clients contacted us a few months later for phase two of this project. They were interested in a feasibility study which entailed a new construction add-on, enlarging their master suite and space for a new office and a new bedroom for their second child that was on the way. This budget study in conjunction with our builder gave the clients an accurate gauge of what their remodel and new addition would cost and they agreed to commence work. The design team then resurrected client provided inspiration photos, architectural drawings, paint colors, and relevant elements to successfully expand the bones and create design flow during this second phase of upgrades.
Client phase two requests included the specification and installation of new herringbone porcelain floor tile in the mud hall entry spaces, procuring additional matching wood flooring for the new addition, additional matching architectural hardware, new paint selection, new decorative and ambient lighting, and new window shades and custom draperies including motorized blackout shades to darken the master bedroom windows. Additional storage elements were added with a closet system installed in the office and a built-in bookcase with toy storage below was implemented in the new hallway to the master suite. A furniture plan was developed to continue the re-use of select furnishings and add new where appropriate.
The highlight of this remodel and new addition was the stunning new master bathroom. Quality materials included modern stria rectangular format glazed porcelain tile applied to all walls and floors, a four foot wide feature wall stripe of floor-to-ceiling marble mosaic tile in front of a pristine white acrylic soaker tub, modern chrome plumbing and cabinetry hardware packages, custom grey painted wood cabinetry double storage towers and vanities topped with clean white quartz counters. Oversize mirrors flanked with glamorous chrome art glass sconces create another wow factor for this couple’s bathroom sanctuary. The new custom mosaic tiled shower houses a unique steam shower system and features digital thermostatic and volume controls behind a frameless estate glass door system with built-in glass vent. A rain shower with four stimulating ceiling mounted shower panels, a personal hand shower, and three wall body jets offered a unique, custom performance showering experience that utilizes digital touch panels – no traditional valves are found anywhere in the shower.
This project fused distinctive and durable product specifications, unmatched project management coordination, and superior installation techniques to attain a highly functioning well-designed family home. During the design development course of the project, the couple announced they were welcoming a new second baby and wished to return to their completed home before he was born. Schedules were adjusted and the highly satisfied couple moved in on time to their super hip and beautifully organic dream home.
