Tucked on a hillside in a historic neighborhood of Indianapolis lies a 1923 Arts and Crafts home owned by a pharmaceutical executive and his partner. The design team was retained to renovate their existing second story Master Bathroom that had gone virtually unchanged since the home was built. The design plan called for the annexing of space from the upper hall landing and an unused back hallway to space plan a luxury spa bathroom that incorporated a large walk-in shower with built-in bench, medical air-tub, a double vanity and linen closet.  The designers conceptualized the update of the bath remain historically inclusive of the period of the home.  To accomplish this, the designers specified subway tile to evoke the 1920’s period of the home, but laid in a vertical format to emphasize height and provide an updated atmosphere. Additionally, the design team created a custom columnar support for a knee-wall and architectural millwork in keeping with the existing millwork throughout the home.  Creating the spa effect desired of the homeowners, a radiant floor heating system was installed under Crossville porcelain tile, a custom 3/8” estate glass encapsulates the shower surround and built-in bench, pewter glazed birch cabinetry and Cambrian Black brushed granite supports under-mounted vitreous china sinks with American Standard satin-nickel plumbing fixtures.  Hand-made iron and opal glass vanity light fixtures were fabricated in Vermont to coordinate with the overall Arts and Crafts theme.  Layering onto these luxury materials the design team planned a functional electrical and lighting scheme, understated color palette in harmony with hand-selected Egyptian cotton toweling, unique bathroom accessories, artwork and original Frankoma prairie-green pottery to surround the clients with the ultimate in comfort to escape from the rigors of their professional lives.
