This soft-spoken neonatal nurse came to the design team with a great room and formal dining area typical in today’s open-concept floor plans.  The dining area had previously been used as a mock library for her collection of books, media and small accessories and the great room an entertaining and television space.  With decent architectural bones and existing furniture leaning towards a country-cottage feel, the design team prescribed a design plan to transform the under-utilized dining area into a true library and reading nook, as well as uplift the great room with additional pieces to complete this space and elevate the design style.  Beginning with a new, gentile color palette inspired from existing fabrics to unify the spaces, the designers layered onto this backdrop custom designed bookcases, credenza and entertainment center manufactured from European white pine.  The designers specified a natural waxed finish on the library pieces and a wonderfully rich distressed sage green for the entertainment center.  In addition to these custom pieces, the library was appointed with a new library table and upholstered chairs with a primary seat and arm fabric and contrasting outer back in a lovely floral design.  Finishing touches included custom long drapery panels of embroidered bronze silk with a golden striae leading edge band, on a walnut fluted drapery rod in the great room, custom peek-a-boo cornices in the library, a table skirt and foyer bench seat cushion in a bright silk check pattern from Kravet, and hand-selected artwork, accessories and custom framed photography throughout.  The result is a cheerful and inviting space that echoes sophistication while remaining grounded in a principally cottage ambience reflecting the client’s whimsical sensibility.
