Modernize and harmonize an early 1980’s contemporary kitchen was the request from this earthy lawyer homeowner and his energetic family. This project was a welcome challenge to the design team due to the requirements by the homeowners to salvage all existing Ash hardwood flooring and stained oak millwork. The designers were also asked to help organize their hectic lives while infusing their personal preferences for natural and healthy materials plus a more modern design aesthetic. The design plan included the removal of obtrusive and outdated original metal cabinetry, reconfiguration of doorways and removal of small closets to provide better circulation plus the addition of new windows and pocket doors to open and brighten the space. Once architectural issues were solved, a new electrical and lighting plan was developed to illuminate all pathway and work surfaces. Custom Maple cabinets in a full-flush slab door profile and custom low VOC boxes plus a warm brown stain package were custom designed for the Kitchen, Communications Station, Pantry, Laundry, Powder Bathrooms and Mud Hall cabinetry with an emphasis on the reduction of formaldehyde emissions. New energy star rated appliances from Wolf, GE, Jenn-Air and Kobe, a gourmet stainless steel sink from Oliveri and faucetry from Grohe and American Standard all contributed to the clean-lined look with long-term durability. To unify the spaces, the designers labored to specify a final material that would marry the client’s desire for natural materials and coordinate all new and existing materials. The perfect specification was found in a special Taupe Brown 3cm granite countertops and full wrap backsplashes. It was imperative that this element be an easily cleanable surface, contain the correct colorways and movement that would create balance, rhythm and harmonize the new with the old. The result are spaces that harken to the client’s connection with health and nature, relate to the home’s surroundings, respect the home and function in a clean fashion beyond their expectations.
