Finish our spa bath in a Euro modern, minimal, functional way, and make it cost effective and beautiful…these were the desires that our professional, French Canadian and Romanian clients requested of the design team. The design directive was simple enough at first glance; however, complicating matters was the home owners’ inheritance of an architect’s home with an unfinished, ellipsoidal master bathroom. With absolutely no square walls and the complete absence of right angles, the designers challenge was to specify finished products that would be incorporated seamlessly into a space with round walls. Additionally, the previous owners had pre-purchased finished plumbing fixtures that were discontinued and needed additional parts. The designers inventoried all materials, finalized plumbing specifications and developed a full set of construction documents to complete the build out of this most unusual bathroom. In keeping with the minimalist European Spa Bath theme, an interior design plan was crafted to hand tile all vertical and horizontal surfaces throughout the bathroom with clean, white mesh-mounted mosaic tile which would adhere easily to the round walls. Plumbing and lighting locations were moved to create symmetry at the wall mounted vanities with waterfall faucets and a custom storage cabinet was designed to fill a void in the toilet niche wall beneath a staircase. Italian, hand-blown glass wall sconces and simple, all chrome, ultra-moderne decorative bathroom hardware from Spain completed the vanity area to convey the straight-forward function of the bathroom. The final space is one in which the flowing curves of the tiled walls and tub deck, compact and efficient vanity layouts, simple and clean materials create an atmosphere of serenity in this most private of spaces.
