Hampered by poor lighting conditions at work, these clients compelled the design team to lighten and brighten their public and private spaces by infusing their love of travel to the Yucatan Peninsula. Working with the existing, hard-installed neutral backdrops including flooring and wall color, the design plan embraced and enhanced this neutrality by selecting textiles that both complimented and contrasted textures and patterns to break up the existing palette. A new space plan was created to take advantage of the room's proportions and wonderful natural light provided by the large window wall in the great room. The designers were able to marry two major focal points: an existing granite fireplace and a pair of 200 year old Oaxaca convent doors. Layered onto this warm palette, all public and private spaces were appointed with new custom upholstery, case goods, custom drapery treatments, bedding, area rugs, artwork and hand-selected accessories. Commissioned artwork in the Dining Room, a custom hand-blown and formed glass panel in the Master Bathroom and a contemporary, custom Bear Grass resin panel in the Foyer art niche rounded out the appropriate design elements for each of the spaces. The client’s existing materials were integrated and re-purposed in order to create variety and color throughout and left the clients with a familiarity that is both restful and reminiscent of their travels.
